The City Red Cross of Skopje has taken care of around 160 homeless people in the Momin Potok homeless shelter in Skopje since 2008. At the shelter, homeless people are provided with medical checks and receive food, clothing, and a bed to sleep until they are back on their feet. Besides the provision of basic needs, the visitors of Momin Potok were able to learn about their rights and opportunities to exercise them in empowerment workshops, for example in connection with a range of health services and social entitlements, through the project. They could also benefit from vocational training, psychosocial support and other activities that strengthen their emotional and social skills and prepare them for their reintegration into the labor market - an important step towards being able to afford housing again. Homeless women further learned about women's health, such as how to protect themselves from sexual and gender-based violence and where to find support after experiencing violence. In tackling the problem of homelessness in Skopje, the City Red Cross of Skopje also regularly communicates with the relevant ministries for labor, social and health policy, with the Employment Agency of the Republic of North Macedonia and other institutions.
All these measures contribute to strengthening the right of homeless people to an adequate standard of living in North Macedonia and to improving their chances of living independently again.
